Roll back the restrictions & add some light advertising & premium junk like reddit's. They bought it for 3 million, they don't have to turn it into a giant for it to be a happy profitable business.
I listened to a podcast about Ramon's story and it certainly had the ring of truth - the guy was an internet marketing specialist who bought the weiner dog ramp business as he sensed it was a good product that was failing to find its potential market. Through the use of highly targeted ads he was able to find potential customers at a cost lower than his profit on the goods - so he turned it into a successful business.
Throwing money at internet marketing without a lot of thought is probably throwing it away for many businesses. Hiring a specialist to do your marketing is often not really any better because the industry is rife with shysters.
As someone who's donated via PBSC it's a whole lot more than a regular blood donation. Two batteries of tests, the drugs are no joke, and the donation session is more or less a whole day affair - or two days if you're unlucky and they don't harvest enough cells the first day (I was unlucky).
I don't have any regrets doing it - the impost on me was fairly trivial compared to the difference it can make for the recipient, but it's not a thing to be taken lightly.
If we can agree the act is in self-interest, and we can agree that society has a role to play in disincentivizing certain self-interested actions that harm the greater good, then we can agree that society should apply those disincentives to ransoms.
As someone who inherited a half broken half-arsed hybrid BIND-Windows environment - now that I've decommissioned the BIND side, our DNS is a lot simpler to operate and understand, and we have far fewer 'glitches'.
This is not a knock on BIND - it is good software, but in the average Wintel environment you're probably just adding unnecessary complexity for marginal gains.
